Road transport

Some key aspects

Road transport

Volume specialists often focus on groupage (up to, say, 5 pallets), or partial loads (LTL) or full loads (FTL - Full Truck Load). There are also certainly all-round companies offering a mix of these, but what fits well with a shipper's shipment profile.

Land or regional specialists are good at specific destinations and routes. Because they drive there often and a lot, and therefore have few empty cars both there and back, they can often offer competitive rates.

There are also companies that specialise in certain markets. For instance, for supermarket deliveries, very different things are important than in the chemical industry.

In terms of cargo type, you can think of pallets, IBCs, packed goods, loose goods or bulk transport. Most carriers focus on transporting goods on pallets.

At the shopping is the challenge for shippers to find the right mix out of this jungle of transport companies and logistics service providers and use them appropriately in transport management. Indeed, there are many specialisms, including:

  • Volume
  • Country and region
  • Market sectors
  • Load type
  • Conditioning and trailer types
  • Combinations of the above

Finally, conditioning of temperature, humidity and so on is important for transporting some goods. There may also be requirements of importance for trailers, such as a tail lift or caged lift.

Good market knowledge is essential to determine the right mix of carriers for each specific shipper, depending on the products, total volume, volume per shipment, transit time from road or intermodal, region and requirements for trucks, trailers and personnel in terms of conditioned transport, dangerous goods (ADR), and so on. With a TMS "The right mix" can also be put to good use.
