Air freight

Some key aspects

Air freight

If fast delivery over longer distances is important, then air cargo may be of interest. Air cargo is a form of transport where goods can be transported around the world using cargo planes. It is an expensive form of transport because of the limited capacity and operational costs involved.

One of the most important factors in air cargo is the weight and dimensions of the cargo. When transporting cargo by air, it is important that the cargo is properly packed and labelled to avoid damage or loss. It is also important to take into account regulations and customs formalities that may differ from country to country. It is therefore important to use an experienced freight forwarder or logistics provider to arrange air cargo transport. Of course, an important aspect is the speed at which the goods areĀ supplied. Air freight is sometimes a necessary option for perishable goods, for example, or simply to replenish shortages quickly....

With air cargo, it is additionally important to know whether the cargo fits on lower deck (under the floor), or has to be carried on main deck. For the latter, capacity is even more limited in the fleet of cargo planes and combi planes (which carry the main cabin partly cargo and partly passengers). Specific rules are in place for transporting hazardous materials to ensure the safety of transport, which further limits capacity.

In short, air cargo is a convenient and fast solution for transporting goods over long distances. However, it is also a very expensive form of transport that involves specific concerns and regulations. It is therefore important to hire an experienced freight forwarder or logistics provider to arrange the transport.

As air freight is often not common among companies, there are often no fixed rates. For this reason, procurement is therefore called spot. It is often wise to do this through a TMS to organise it so that rates can be requested and compared quickly and easily from multiple parties.
